Abstract

Jordanian inventors came up with a solution for medication non-adherence by developing a system of hardware and software to be part of the solution of medication non-adherence.
The inventors are now looking for an investor to help developing the system to be ready for entering into the market through a manufacturing and financial agreement. The inventors are targeting Europe and USA.

Description

Medication non-adherence is a global problem that has its impact on elderly life, their relatives, healthcare workers and government economies. It is responsible about the lost of more than 300,000 lives yearly in both the USA and the EU,(33–69%) of unplanned hospital readmission cases and the waste of about 8% of total healthcare expenditure per year globally.

A Jordanian healthcare startup provides a comprehensive patented solution that engages all the parties to minimize all the errors resources and increase the medication adherence.

The solution combines hardware automation with software control to provide an unmatched user experience that is easy to access and adopt for everyone who is involved. It consists of :

Digital Platform:
It will be the heart of the system that manages the whole process and communicates with all parties where it:
•Has multi-level access based on role (pharmacists, relatives, patients)
•Saves patients’ details and regimen
•Controls the filling machine
•Generates barcodes
•Sends notifications.
•Sends special orders (doses on demand)
•Saves data about the patient’s adherence
•Has a mobile application to request next dosage details and check refill times

Filling Machine:
It is installed at the medication distribution channel (e.g. pharmacy) and controlled via the digital platform. It fills the cartridges automatically and label it with the barcode

Cartridges:
It is an innovative plastic cartridges that:
•Disposable : to avoid contamination and simplify refill process
•Holds one type of medication (sorted pills)
•Has a barcode which holds all the information about the patient and the regimen. Multi capacity based on pill size (10, 20, 30, 60)

MIND (Mini, Intelligent and Nearby Dispenser):
Which is a full automatic dispenser that was developed to help patients adhere to their medications in the highest reliable and simplest way.

The dispenser consist of:
Main cabinet that:
•Recognizes cartridges and regimen automatically (no need for data entry or any adjustments) by reading the barcodes
•Has a large capacity (where it can be loaded with up to 23 different medications)
•Accumulates doses from the cartridges when required
•Activates alarm when dose occur
•Sends SMS about dose status to the digital platform (taken or missed)
•Holds missed doses automatically to let device work without human interaction

A portable device:
It is a small portable device that:
•Filled and emptied automatically by the main cabinet sorted by dose time
•Gives the patient access to the right dose only when it is required
•Holds 4 doses
•Saves data about dose status
•Can be used outside or inside the house if the patient has a disability

The system was developed to serve:

oDecreasing filling time
oEliminating human error in filling
oCreate customer loyalty

Caregiver by:
oRemind about refills
oEliminate the burden of sorting pills
oGive updates on adherence status
oRemove the burden of entering the data
oSimplify changing regimen process
Patient:
oThe dispenser holds all his pills
oProvides reminders to eliminate the confusions happened because of health complication in vision and memory
oKeep his medications with him by using the portable device

As a result of the support of a Jordanian NGO the inventors received Jordanian patent in 2016 and registered US patent -pending- since 2014.
At June 2015 the inventors were funded by a European Funded project that is Support to Research, technological development and innovation/SRTD II project, that allowed them to be incubated in iPark- a well known incubator– where they build the proof of concept of most of the system parts and shaping their startup.
Now they are looking for an investment to help continue their work–based on a 2-year work plan-to develop the industrial models, acquire required approvals and build a small focus group to be ready to enter the market.
