Abstract
Dutch corporate specialized in design and making of plastic packaging for food products is looking for new technological solutions for a top seal of only Amorphous Polyethylene Terephthalate (APET) that adheres well and does not leak when proteins are smeared over it.
They are looking for partners to cooperate within the frame of a research cooperation agreement or technical cooperation agreement.
This request refers to an innovation challenge published on an open internet-platform.
Description
The Dutch corporate has been designing and producing plastic packaging for various industries at home and abroad for decades and has specialized in packaging for fresh food and personal care products.
One of their branches located in the North-West of The Netherlands produces thermoformed packaging from APET (Amorphous Polyethylene Terephthalate) and PP (Poly Propylene) for the fresh food industry.
Sustainability is their top priority, which is why they make their packaging as much as possible from mono material, including the lid or top seal.
That does not work for fresh meat dishes. Meat, fish and poultry contain proteins and these spread on the edge of the packaging when packed. As a result, a top seal of the same material (APET) does not adhere well and leakage occurs. Due to the leakage, air can get to the product and there is a good chance that the product will spoil before the expiry date.
The current solution is a less durable one. For the packaging of fish, meat and poultry, both shell and top seal are made of APET in combination with PE (Poly Ethylene). PE is added as a laminating layer to ensure good adhesion of the shell and top seal. When sealing, the PE layers fuse with each other, which gives a leak-free closure.
Many tests and experiments were carried out to make the shell and top seal of APET only, but with disappointing results. The solution must be 100% safe.
Note: this specifically concerns the top seal for fresh products containing proteins, i.e.: fresh meat, fish and poultry. For nuts, for example, it is possible to make the shell and top seal of the mono material APET.
Where can partners contribute:
- Contribution to further sustainability of the plastics industry.
- By developing a top seal from APET that also adheres well and does not leak when proteins are spread over it.
Why not miss this challenge:
- The entire plastics industry is looking for a solution for the challenge.
The company is looking for partners to cooperate within the frame of a research cooperation agreement or technical cooperation agreement. Other types of agreement may also be considered.
IMPORTANT: This technology request refers to an innovation challenge published on an open internet platform. If an organization expresses interest before the closing date, it will be guided towards this open innovation platform.
After registration on the platform participants can browse free through other submissions and engage in discussions. All submissions will get feedback by the company on this open platform.
The challenge closes on October 2nd at 3 pm.
Mind that posts on this platform are not confidential. Beside open discussions on the platform, sharing of confidential information will be made possible on demand. After that, the firm will select the organizations with whom they would like to cooperate in the development of a solution. Once the challenge is closed, expressions of interest for this technology request will be treated in the traditional way.
