Abstract

Dutch internationally operating logistic service provider known for its innovative solutions and collaboration with partners in the supply chain, is looking for a software solution to calculate the amount of emitted carbon dioxide (CO2) per transport order and subsequently offer compensation options for this emission. A commercial agreement with technical assistance, a license or services agreement could be provided.
This request refers to a challenge published on an open internet-platform.

Description

The company was founded in the Netherlands in 1946 and has developed from a national milk transporting company into an internationally operating logistic service provider. New technologies are implemented continuously and new cooperation partners are actively sought after, in order to further assist and unburden customers. Nowadays the company is one of Europe’s largest logistic service providers and a leading partner in the supply chain for liquid foodstuff in bulk.
In other sectors - such as the energy market and car industry - sustainability, green solutions and foot print compensation have become the norm and are even unique selling points, for which the customer happily pays. This is not (yet) common in the transport sector. Transport is considered as a commodity and low-costs are key. The company wants to start to change this by providing insight in carbon dioxide (CO2) emission during transport and by offering a way to compensate those emissions.
Acting as the control tower for international logistics, the company coordinates between all parties involved in the supply chain: suppliers, carriers and manufacturers of the end product. As a so-called 4PL (Fourth-Party Logistics) the company manages the logistic activities and the execution across the supply chain for its customers. The 4PL provider uses numerous carriers throughout Europe to carry out the transport and is therefore the ultimate party to offer more strategic insight in and management over the manufacturer’s supply chain. Consequently the company is the designated link to raise sustainability in the supply chain to a higher level.
Integrating sustainability into the transport sector is a challenging task due to the dominant focus on low-costs. Therefore the company wants to find a solution to offer the customers insight in and options to easily compensate the emitted carbon dioxide (CO2) during transport. The company would like to take responsibility in reducing the carbon footprint in the supply chain of liquid bulk transport and use their influential role in the transport sector by offering the option for carbon dioxide (CO2) emission compensation.

Since the company is IT-driven, an IT-solution in which emission and compensation calculations will be embedded into existing quotations and contracts software, is the most likely solution. As development of smart IT systems and related technology is not part of their core business the company needs outside expertise to incorporate new innovative technologies or novel ideas to realize this.

The company is looking for start-ups, developer and/or SME’s and is open for all innovative solutions based on Artificial Intelligence, big data or smart data analytics, software design, software integration systems and creative thinking. Cooperation could be in the frame of co-creation or as a partner in applying new or ready-made solutions, matching with a commercial agreement with technical assistance, a license or a services agreement.
