Abstract

A Spanish Group of entities supporting a city hall in urban and environmental initiatives is involved in a project to prevent the contamination of the Mediterranean with the wastes coming from the rainwater discharged in a riverbed in their area. They search for partners to share the knowledge and results of the current project in order to implement them in other Mediterranean ecosystems and generate new project ideas to collaborate under a research or technical cooperation agreement.

Description

A Spanish group of entities created by the city hall to design and implement urban initiatives, collaborates with three companies in an ecological transition project for the environmental sustainability of the rainwater discharged in their municipality into the riverbed.

The problem that the project tackles is to prevent the riverbed-discharged rainwater from containing all kind of wastes that contaminate the river and the beaches of the Mediterranean coast.

The project proposes as the solution for the identified problem the installation of SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) such as permeable surfaces and finishes, as well as water lamination basins, underground storm tanks and a set of auxiliary and complementary facilities (electromechanical facilities, gates, grills) that allow the waters evacuated to the receiving environment - ultimately the river channel - to be evacuated clean without thick and floating solids. It is therefore a project that will involve a structural change with a lasting impact on the sustainability of the municipality and its beaches, as well as the beaches of the neighbouring municipalities.

The foreseen duration of the project is 96 weeks (2021-2024) and the group of entities are looking for partners to participate in other projects related to pollution prevention of the Mediterranean Sea, sustainable storm water management and marine pollution prevention projects.

The three companies they are collaborating with for the moment are:

• Hydraulic and hydrological engineering consultancy: they carry out all kind of reports or projects related to hydraulics, hydrology and hydrogeology, specialized in the study of flooding projects. They design solutions that can make the projects viable from the flood point of view, even in the most complex and unfavourable cases

• Independent company that provides professional consulting, engineering and architecture services. They have a lot of experience in planning and water management projects, dams and large hydraulic works, water treatments, desalination, transportation and distribution of water and smart water

• Company that will take part in the purification of water, both rain and waste. They will help to design and also manufacture the spillways and storm tanks, necessary in current sanitation systems or networks, and whose purpose is the control and regulation of the total flows that reach the wastewater treatment plants.

The Spanish group of entities is interested in participating in global projects for the protection the Mediterranean and/or the conservation of the environment via a research cooperation agreement. They are also willing to establish technical cooperation agreements with the partners sought for exchanging knowledge and results of the local project described above and similar ones, and share experiences to be implemented.
